Probenecid and Colchicine Tablets, USP
Probenecid and colchicine tablets, USP, are a combination medication used in the treatment of gout.
Probenecid works by reducing the uric acid levels in the blood by increasing its excretion through the kidneys. It helps prevent gout attacks by lowering the levels of uric acid, which can form crystals in joints and cause inflammation and pain.
Colchicine, on the other hand, works by decreasing inflammation and pain caused by gout. It does this by reducing the movement of certain white blood cells to the affected area, ultimately reducing the inflammatory response.
The combination of probenecid and colchicine in one tablet is used to manage gout in individuals who have difficulty tolerating nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or have contraindications to other medications used to treat gout.
